10 Tips To Get You Writing

I have created a list of methods I use to keep me pushing through whatever I may be writing. This list might be great for other authors of a novel, a blog post, a short story, an outline, a poem, or even a song!

  1. Figure out your goals
    • I bet a lot of people think an author’s only goal is to sit down and write up the story they have bouncing around inside their heads. If it were that simple there would be a lot more authors getting their novels out to our hands. Before you dive into your work, you have to make sure your author mind knows what you want to happen in your novel. I’m not talking about writing out an outline (if you do that’s fine, too) but rather figuring out the bigger details. If your novel is going to be about a couple then you better know their relationship details. When will they meet? Will it be love at first sight? When is their first kiss? Will they face a lot of troubles in their relationship? Will they fall apart and get back together? What will be the dramatic scenes they face as a couple? The questions are endless, but knowing your characters’ basic stories is a good way to prepare your mind to write out your words.
    • Of course, not all the details will be placed on your list of goals. There have been many times when I was writing and surprised myself with the direction I took my story. But I do my very best to start writing with a small list of goals for my characters to complete while their story is revealed. (I promise, it’s not a bad idea to write your goals down).
  2. Make a schedule and stick to it
    • In this day and age, it is hard to think of a single person sitting around with nothing to do. I find it a true challenge at times to make any progress with my writing due to the other tasks I need to accomplish. This fact must be a true statement for many authors. Some authors have children to look after, many have other jobs to take on (sadly, writing one book can’t guarantee instant fame), sometimes there are other tasks we need to accomplish, and sometimes problems as simple as getting sick appear out of nowhere. There are many things which prevent us from even writing out one chapter. I believe, simply setting aside a bit of time to write a single page is better than nothing.
    • When an author wants to create a schedule for writing there is a lot of factors to consider before you block off time to write. It would be best to figure out a time when you can lock yourself in your writing area, turn off your phone, and not worry about someone needing you. Heck, go in your bedroom and shut the door with a sign outside saying “COME BACK LATER! I’M WORKING!” If you were at your other job, then your friends and family couldn’t pull you away, right? Not only do you need to dedicate your time seriously for your career, but those close to your need to respect the schedule you’ve created for yourself. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find a bit of private time with little distractions around.
  3. Make yourself a nice meal/snack
    • This would be a task to complete before you begin writing. I know I can’t focus on anything if I’m even a little bit hungry. I believe it is a great idea to schedule some of your writing time after you finish a meal. Of course, this depends on what your schedule is like outside of your dedicated writing time. If you can’t write after you’ve scarfed down a great meal, then don’t be afraid to have a mini snack. Grab an apple to eat a healthy snack and fill the empty space in your belly!
  4. Find a comfortable location
    • More often than not I sit at my kitchen table to write anything. Honestly, I didn’t want this to be where I wrote because of all the distractions around, but I almost don’t feel comfortable writing anywhere else. It is good to take hold of what makes writing easiest for you. If it’s sitting in the hard chairs at your kitchen table or slouching back in a beanbag chair on the floor (I wouldn’t recommend that because it could seriously mess up your back) you better do it. I know if I made my workplace an uncomfortable location I wouldn’t want to work. I want to love every trait involved in taking on my dream career.
  5. Make sure all of your supplies are with you
    • An author’s supplies are usually pretty simple but they can vary from author to author. While I complete most of my writing on my computer, another author may use a notebook and pen to write up their ideas. It’s a good plan to make sure all parts are available or at least within your grasp before you start writing. Computer charger, mouse, notebooks, pencils, pen, dictionary, completed research, notes, and every little piece which will help bring your novel to life. It’s a big risk when an author has to step away because they forgot to grab the one book holding the one fact about the one job they’re writing about. Stepping away from your work brings in the risk of not returning.
  6. Ignore internal distractions
    • Internal distractions can range anywhere from worrying about the fight you had with your little cousin the night before to your doctor’s appointment scheduled Monday morning. It’s a good plan to learn how to turn your mind off of the real world so you can slip into your story. Looking into meditation, deep breathing exercises, or writing down all your thoughts to read them over after you work are a few methods to force your mind to focus on the story you want to write.
  7. Start with the simple scenes
    • I think it is okay to write the simple scenes first. The large scenes might call for your entire focus. If your mind is wrapped around a silly scene you want to work on, you might make a mistake on another moment in the book. Writing the scenes clouding up your mind might be the best way to get those other chapters you aren’t excited about writing finished correctly.
  8. Study before you write those unknown facts
    • My new novel is going to feature a special investigator as a main character. At first, I assumed simply labeling him as an FBI agent would be an easy way to cover the basic idea of his work. Thankfully, I did some research to learn there was a lot more to an FBI agent than simply solving tough cases. Without the studies I forced myself to complete, I probably would have been fine to start my novel. But there was so much I would have wrong if I wouldn’t have studied. if an actual FBI agent read my novel without me completing the proper research, it might have been an insult to his or her work. It’s good to have the facts figured out so the details an author writes are believable and the facts aren’t made up.
  9. Write by hand or deny internet access while on your computer
    • The internet is my biggest threat when I type up a novel on my computer. It would only take a couple clicks for me to become distracted by my Facebook page, looking at my Etsy page, or even checking the updates for my blog. My laziness holds me back from forcing myself to write in a notebook. Not to mention, I would also be afraid I would lose said notebook. I think it’s much easier to type up my novels, but the many distractions on a computer might mean it’s better for some to stick to writing in a notebook.
  10. Write every day!
    • I’m willing to place a high bet behind the fact an author writes because they love to do it. Why not try to do what you love every day? Write the next chapter, write a little poem, or write away in your diary. An author should never let the opportunity to do what they love fade away.
  • Bonus: Don’t compare your progress, writing style, or methods to anyone else!
    • Everyone is different so what works for me might not work for you. You might read some of these tips and think “Well, duh that needs to happen” or you might laugh and call me an idiot. This list only holds my tips.
